Public in the dark about the Northern Lights

WITH Caithness reckoned to be one of the best places on the UK mainland to witness the Northern Lights, a local hotelier is pressing for more to be done by the tourist industry to highlight the attraction.Pentland Lodge hotel co-owner Liz Sutherland said the dark skies above the far north are the best in the country to witness the lights.Her views come as scientists at Lancaster University have put a call out to the public to help compile a list of the best places in the UK to photograph the Aurora Borealis.Solar activity which causes the phenomenon to appear in the night skies is said to be the best in a lifetime. Already scientists have received calls from the public informing them of sightings from as far south as East Anglia.But Mrs Sutherland said the public is generally in the dark about Caithness being the best location in the UK to view the spectacular natural lights show.
