State rests in Martinez sexual battery case


A former jailhouse friend testified Tuesday that David Manuel Martinez had admitted molesting a girl during the second day of a capital sexual battery case.James Pleasant is an inmate at the St. Johns County Jail who described a shocking conversation with Martinez while they were living in the same cell block."(Martinez said) he'd messed with (her)," Pleasant testified.He went on to describe the way Martinez would set up rendezvous with the alleged victim and claimed that he had paid her $100 for sexual favors.The defense countered that Pleasant could be offering the testimony just to get a better deal in his own case. Pleasant entered a plea of no contest to 25 counts of possession of a sexual performance by a child in August 2011 but has yet to be sentenced. The state has agreed to 8.2-15 years in prison, but the judge will determine the actual sentence.
Pleasant did admit that he tried to get a more favorable deal in his case in return for his testimony. However, he said the state refused to grant him anything.Therefore, Pleasant decided he would testify anyway against a person he referred to as a friend. Pleasant said he was a victim of sexual abuse himself and wanted to do the right thing.One of the solar lights being distributed is the portable one. The attorney for Martinez, Marcella Beeching, said the defendant has not decided whether he will take the stand in his defense. She indicated that he is the only potential witness the defense will call, so closing arguments should take place Thursday before sending the case to the jury.Also of great interest were two pages from a journal by the alleged victim.
