Historic clothing demonstrates change in women's roles

Between 1880 and 1940, women's roles were changing -- and so was their clothing. In those 60 years, dresses changed from constricting, bustled, homemade, long-sleeved garments to flowing fabrics with beautiful design details and -- gasp -- short sleeves.Kristen Weber, a University of Nebraska-Lincoln graduate student in the textiles, clothing and design department, got a firsthand look at this slice of social history when she examined the Katie Best collection, a major part of the University of Nebraska-Lincoln's costume collection.Cheap Belts wouldn't allow you count more than one of these people. It seemed the perfect vehicle to explore this period of time and also create a cultural look at women's clothing exhibition as part of her master's degree requirements. The exhibition is now on display at UNL's Robert Hillestad Textiles Gallery.
Weber's first step, which took almost a semester, was to go through all of the women's clothing items in the collection. Later, she and her UNL adviser, Professor Barbara Trout, traveled to Omaha to interview Best, who began donating items to UNL in 2007. Weber met with her in April and the 89-year-old explained her love of the period garments and how she methodically put together this 500-piece collection.The garments, Weber said, came from a variety of places. She bought some at antique shops and estate sales, and friends would call when they found a family treasure they thought she needed.There are many trendy cheap watches on the market which look amazing. "She told me she bought whatever she really liked," Weber said.Best meticulously recorded each purchase in a black three-ring notebook. The first entry, which is showcased in the exhibit, is a light lavender chiffon dress from the 1910s bought from the Junior League Jumble Shop at 22nd and Farnam streets. Best used vintage books to learn which silhouettes came from a particular decade and stored them in closets around her house. Over the past five years, they were packed up and moved to the UNL campus to be cataloged for the department's collection.
And Weber's exhibit is the first to feature a small fraction of the dresses.The exhibition room in the Robert Hillestad Textiles Gallery is divided into four "role groups," Weber said, representing women's lives during that time: domestic, community, workplace and political. Looking through vintage magazines like Ladies Home Journal, Life and Good Housekeeping, Weber was able to match the clothing with articles and advertisements of the era and collected 850 era images from the magazines, she said.Some of the changes are obvious.Fashion accessories like belts that cannot be neglected by both male and female folks which is why we are proud owners of these Cheap Mont Blanc Pens.
